dry, extract grade juniper berries.
Contrary to the name, blue
juniper berries aren’t actually berries, but the female seed
cones of evergreen shrubs—Though they do have many fruit-like characteristics
including a distinct, aromatic odor.
There are different types of juniper berries: Eastern European juniper has more of a straight piney-juniper flavor, while Italian juniper berries are smaller with a more complex, fruity flavor.
Juniper
is used in traditional Central/Northern European and Scandinavian
cuisine to give a sharp, clear flavor to meats. It’s also common to make
gin with juniper berries, or to include juniper berries in sauerkraut.
In herbal medicine, juniper is most often used as a diuretic.
