Description
Very dry, extract grade juniper berries. Contrary to popular belief, blue juniper berries aren’t actually berries at all, but the female seed cones of evergreen shrubs. They have many fruit-like characteristics, including a distinct, aromatic odor.
Juniper is used in traditional Central/Northern European and Scandinavian cuisine to give a sharp, clear flavor to meats. It’s also common to make gin with juniper berries, or to include juniper berries in sauerkraut. In herbal medicine, juniper is most often used as a diuretic.
There are different types of juniper berries in addition to this large, plump variety. Eastern European juniper has more of a straight piney-juniper flavor, while Italian juniper berries are smaller with a more complex, fruity flavor.
