The black walnut is a
tree native to North America. Black walnuts are smaller, harder, and more
pungent than the English walnuts sold in grocery stores. The hulls are used in
traditional herbalism, for its high tannin content and iodine levels. Black
walnut was used by Native Americans and European settlers as a laxative and tonic
remedy for a variety of conditions, including rheumatic and arthritic joints,
headaches, dysentery, constipation, and wounds.
