Description
What are juniper berries? Contrary to popular belief, they aren’t actually berries at all, but the female seed cones of evergreen shrubs. Edible juniper berries have many fruit-like characteristics, including a distinct, aromatic odor.
Whole juniper berries are used in traditional Central/Northern European and Scandinavian cuisine to give a sharp, clear flavor to meats. It’s also common to find gin flavored with juniper berries — this may be done with Italian juniper berries or Eastern European juniper berries. In traditional herbal practices, juniper is most often considered a diuretic.
