Juniper berries aren’t technically berries at all, they are actually the female seed cones of evergreen shrubs, but still have many characteristics of fruit including a distinctly aromatic odor.
In Scandinavian as well as Northern and Central European cuisine, Eastern European juniper berries are used to imbue meats with a sharp, clear flavor. Juniper berries are also used in herbal medicine, most often as a diuretic.
