Also referred to as curcumin (a constituent of turmeric), Indian Saffron, and Alappuzha. We offer powdered Alleppey turmeric in bulk, obtained from the rhizome (underground stem) of the plant. It is a deep orange-yellow color with an earthy, bitter, peppery flavor and a mustardy smell. Alleppey turmeric powder is reputed to have a higher curcumin content, which gives it a slightly darker color and more oiliness than other turmeric powders.

About the California Prop 65 Warning
California Prop 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires labeling of known or suspected carcinogenic and reproductive toxins identified by the State of California. Originally designed for warnings on the safety of drinking water, Prop 65 now encompasses products from electrical and computer components to coffee, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Some products we offer do contain naturally occurring or environmentally present toxins, of which a common toxin is lead. Due to the presence of lead in almost all soils across the globe (from the use of lead paints, leaded gasoline, and other lead-bearing products in previous decades), some products - those that absorb a small amount of this lead from the soil - may need to bear a warning label. It is important to note that Prop 65 carries some of the most stringent standards, often overwhelmingly above Federal standards. With lead, for example, the Federal limit is 10 parts per million and our products normally test below 0.1 parts per million. In the case of lead in turmeric, with the Prop 65 limit of 15 µg/day one would have to consume 1/3 of a pound (over 1 cup) of turmeric daily to exceed the Prop 65 limit. However, since we cannot control how much turmeric one ingests in a day and cannot ensure an individual consumes less than 1/3 of a pound daily, we must include the Prop 65 warning.
